Nuance Form Template Editor License Activation Error 48: “The server couldn’t activate license”

Applies to: All versions of Ephesoft Transact

Issue

When trying to activate a license for the Nuance Form Template Editor, you may receive the following error:

Error 48: Activate License: The server couldn't activate license 'XXXXX-XXX-XXXX-XXXX-XX'.

Root Cause

License activation may fail if the licensing database is corrupted, or because of invalid licensing server IP address information. The URL used to download and activate licenses for the Nuance Form Template Editor has changed.

Solution

If you’re experiencing issues activating your license, try these fixes:

  • Reset the licensing database.
  • Modify your system hosts file and use the Nuance Licensing Tool.
  • Perform manual activation through the new website.

Reset the Licensing Database

The licensing database in the local machine may be corrupted. You can reset the licensing database using the following steps:

  1. Close the Nuance licensing tool.
  2. Stop the Nuance Licensing Service.
    1. Open the Windows Services console.
    2. Right-click the Nuance Licensing Service.
    3. Click Stop.
  3. Go to C:\ProgramData\Nuance\License Manager.
  4. Rename the License Manager folder to “License Manager-Old”.
  5. Start the Nuance Licensing Service.
    1. Open the Windows Services console.
    2. Right-click the Nuance Licensing Service.
    3. Click Start.
  6. Try to download and activate the licenses again.

Note: If you are still experiencing issues activating your licenses, refer to one of the other solutions provided.

Modify the System Hosts File

The hosts file allows the operating system to map domain names to specific IP addresses. You can modify this file to force your system to connect to the new license server location.

To do so, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the system hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) in a text editor with elevated permissions.

  1. Add the following text to the end of the file:

63.110.241.55 licenses.nuance.com

  1. Save the hosts file.
  2. Download and activate your licenses as usual using the Nuance Licensing Tool.

Note: If you are still experiencing issues activating your licenses, refer to one of the other solutions provided.

Website License Activation

Alternatively, you can use the OmniPage website in conjunction with the Nuance Licensing Tool to download and activate licenses.

To do so, perform the following steps:

  1. Go to the OmniPage Capture SDK license download page.

  4. Run the Nuance licensing tool on the target computer (Start > All Programs > Nuance > Licensing > Nuance Central Licensing Tool).
  5. Import the zipped license file pack with the File > Load menu command.
  6. Use the File > Prepare for Manual Activation menu command to save your license pack.
