The workflow for this feature varies by version:<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-6514-_heading=h.ugemruwm33s1\"><\/a>2020.1.02 and below<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>New documents are uploaded into the system and converted to batch instances.<\/li>\n<li>Batch instances are queued in the database using the Activiti framework.<\/li>\n<li>The pickup service runs (based on a cron job) and picks new batch instances based on pickup capacity and <a href=\"https:\/\/ephesoft.com\/docs\/features-and-functions\/administrator\/batch-instance-management-screen\/batch-instance-priority-2\/\">Batch Instance Priority<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The pickup service creates a job for each batch instance using the Activiti framework.<\/li>\n<li>The Activiti processor thread processes one job at a time, waiting a set time between picking up new jobs. This means the following settings have been removed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>application.cluster.mode<\/li>\n<li>activity.job.interval.time<\/li>\n<li>activity.thread.wait.time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"post-6514-_heading=h.c0uo0410b4iq\"><\/a>Pickup Settings<\/h2>\n<p>The pickup service is executed on a single server in a cluster with a fail-over functionality. This is an automatic service that assigns a random server in the cluster to execute the pickup service.<\/p>\n<p>The server on which the pickup service is being executed is responsible for picking up all the batches for the cluster while keeping a check on the total execution capacity of the cluster. This is controlled through the following properties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>server.instance.max.process.capacity.mode<\/li>\n<li>server.instance.max.process.capacity<\/li>\n<li>server.instance.pick.capacity.mode<\/li>\n<li>server.instance.pick.capacity<\/li>\n<li>application.cluster.mode *<\/li>\n<li>activity.job.interval.time *<\/li>\n<li>activity.thread.wait.time *<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perform the following steps to configure the pickup settings.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to the <strong>dcma-workflows.properties <\/strong>file located at [<em>Ephesoft_Directory<\/em>]\\Application\\WEB-INF\\classes\\META-INF\\dcma-workflows.properties.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"811\" height=\"334\" class=\"wp-image-47568\" src=\"https:\/\/ephesoft.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/word-image-5.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ephesoft.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/word-image-5.png 811w, https:\/\/ephesoft.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/word-image-5-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/ephesoft.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/word-image-5-768x316.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Figure 1. <\/em><strong><em>dcma-workflows.properties <\/em><\/strong><em>File<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Configure the following properties according to your workflow needs:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr bgcolor=\"#1f3864\">\n<td><span style=\"color: #ffffff\"><strong>Configurable Property<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"color: #ffffff\"><strong>Options<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr bgcolor=\"#d9e2f3\">\n<td>server.instance.max.process.capacity.mode<\/td>\n<td><strong>0<\/strong> \u2013 max process capacity will be calculated automatically based on the number of cores in the system. Refer to <a href=\"#post-6514-_heading=h.cq6ec1ljs052\">Execution Capacity by Cores<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1<\/strong> \u2013 max process capacity will be equal to the value specified for <strong>server.instance.max.process.capacity.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>server.instance.max.process.capacity<\/td>\n<td>If the above property is set to <strong>1<\/strong>, set this property to the total maximum number of batches that each server in a cluster will execute.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you have a 3-node cluster and each server should execute 5 batches, set this property to <strong>5<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr bgcolor=\"#d9e2f3\">\n<td>server.instance.pick.capacity.mode<\/td>\n<td><strong>0 <\/strong>\u2013 pickup capacity will be calculated automatically based on the number of cores in the system. Refer to <a href=\"#post-6514-_heading=h.cq6ec1ljs052\">Execution Capacity by Cores<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 <\/strong>\u2013 pickup capacity will be equal to the value specified for <strong>server.instance.pick.capacity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Set this value to <strong>1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If this value is set to zero (<strong>0<\/strong>), the capacity will be calculated automatically, and you will not be able to configure the next property.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>server.instance.pick.capacity<\/td>\n<td>Set this property to the total maximum number of batches that will be distributed in a cluster.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you have a 3-node cluster and you want it to pick up 15 batches, set this property to <strong>15<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr bgcolor=\"#d9e2f3\">\n<td>application.cluster.mode <strong>*<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>true<\/strong> \u2013 application is using improved pickup services distribution. This allows for an even distribution across all nodes when running under server capacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>false <\/strong>\u2013 application is using previous pickup services distribution.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>activity.job.interval.time <strong>*<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>This is the activity job interval time in milliseconds.<\/p>\n<p>Set this property to <strong>500<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong>: If you have more than two processing nodes in a cluster, stagger the interval times by 100 milliseconds (500\/600\/700).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr bgcolor=\"#d9e2f3\">\n<td>activity.thread.wait.time <strong>*<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>This is the activity thread wait time in milliseconds.<\/p>\n<p>Set this property to <strong>5000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong>: If you have more than two processing nodes in a cluster, stagger the wait times by 100 milliseconds (5000\/5100\/5200).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>dcma.pickup.wait.ms<sup>\u2020<\/sup><\/td>\n<td>This listening mechanism thread distributes jobs after receiving an event-based trigger or at the specified interval time in milliseconds.<\/p>\n<p>The default value is <strong>6000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>There should be no need to change this property.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><sup>*<em>Only applicable to Ephesoft Transact 2020.1.02<br \/>\n<\/em>\u2020<em>Only applicable to Ephesoft Transact 2020.1.03<\/em><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Important: <\/strong>We recommend configuring all servers in the cluster using the same max process capacity and pick capacity values. This is because any server in the cluster can be assigned to run the pickup service in case of a failover.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Restart the Ephesoft server. If a clustered environment, start all Ephesoft servers one by one.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><a id=\"post-6514-_heading=h.fz1g0edh9eml\"><\/a>Examples<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2020.1 and below<\/strong>: The following excerpt shows an example of recommended settings for a 3-node cluster that should pick up and distribute up to 15 batches at a time.<\/p>\n<pre>## Node 1\r\nserver.instance.max.process.capacity.mode=1\r\nserver.instance.max.process.capacity=5\r\nserver.instance.pick.capacity.mode=1\r\nserver.instance.pick.capacity=15\r\n\r\n## Node 2\r\nserver.instance.max.process.capacity.mode=1\r\nserver.instance.max.process.capacity=5\r\nserver.instance.pick.capacity.mode=1\r\nserver.instance.pick.capacity=15\r\n\r\n## Node 3\r\nserver.instance.max.process.capacity.mode=1\r\nserver.instance.max.process.capacity=5\r\nserver.instance.pick.capacity.mode=1\r\nserver.instance.pick.capacity=15<\/pre>\n<p><strong>2020.1.02<\/strong>: The following excerpt shows an example of additional recommended settings for a 5-node cluster with more than two processing nodes when <strong>application.cluster.mode=true<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<pre>## Node 1\r\napplication.cluster.mode=true\r\nactivity.job.interval.time=500\r\nactivity.thread.wait.time=500\r\n\r\n## Node 2\r\napplication.cluster.mode=true\r\nactivity.job.interval.time=500\r\nactivity.thread.wait.time=500\r\n\r\n## Node 3\r\napplication.cluster.mode=true\r\nactivity.job.interval.time=600\r\nactivity.thread.wait.time=600\r\n\r\n## Node 4\r\napplication.cluster.mode=true\r\nactivity.job.interval.time=600\r\nactivity.thread.wait.time=600\r\n\r\n## Node 5\r\napplication.cluster.mode=true\r\nactivity.job.interval.time=700\r\nactivity.thread.wait.time=700<\/pre>\n<p><strong>2020.1.03 and above: <\/strong>Not applicable<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-6514-_heading=h.cq6ec1ljs052\"><\/a>UI Servers<\/h3>\n<p>In 2020.1.03 and above, UI nodes can be configured to not perform any workflow pickup execution, eliminating the associated inefficiencies. This is accomplished by disabling the new <strong>server.type.processing <\/strong>property.<\/p>\n<p>UI servers should be set where:<\/p>\n<pre>server.instance.max.process.capacity.mode=1\r\nserver.instance.max.process.capacity=0\r\nserver.type.processing=false<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>The UI node can still be the pickup service distribution node if assigned the PICKUP_SERVICE from the service status table, and server.type.processing is set to \u201cfalse\u201d. All other nodes with <strong>server.instance.max.process.capacity<\/strong> greater than zero (0) should have <strong>server.type.processing<\/strong> set to \u201ctrue\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-6514-_heading=h.7s2hjn8485hr\"><\/a>Execution Capacity by Cores<\/h3>\n<p>If either <strong>capacity.mode<\/strong> properties are set to zero (=0), the execution capacity will be automatically calculated based on the total number of cores available for active processing servers. A cron is a string which schedules a task to run on your server automatically at a specified interval. A cron job is the scheduled task itself. For more information on creating cron jobs, refer to<a href=\"https:\/\/ephesoft.com\/docs\/configurations\/cronjob-expressions\/\"> Cron Job Expressions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cron settings for the pickup service determine the wait time to move a batch from <strong>New <\/strong>to <strong>Running <\/strong>state. We recommend that there is a minimum of 15 seconds difference per server.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-6514-_heading=h.kog8t5ve68cr\"><\/a>Activiti<\/h2>\n<p>Activiti is a light-weight workflow and Business Process Management (BPM) Platform that uses the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) standard for defining workflows. It provides a fast and reliable workflow engine for Java. It is open-source and distributed under an Apache license.
